ViWaT - Engineering

Vier Institute des KIT unterstützen Vietnam mit dem ViWaT Mekong Projekt. - Campus-Report am 15. 12. 2020

Interview with Prof. Dr. Stefan Norra, Dr. Nicolas Börsig and M.Sc. Jonas Bauer

"The Covid pandemic only gives a small taste of a much bigger crisis that is seemingly unstoppable. In many places the climate crisis is already a cruel reality. The mighty Mekong River in Southeast Asia, for example, has been threatened by droughts for years. It is one of the longest rivers on earth and the lifeline for the people in six neighboring countries. In the very south of Vietnam, where the Mekong flows into the South China Sea, a team of researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is supporting people in their desperate fight against salt penetrating the groundwater"

Start of groundwater monitoring well drillings (22.08.2020)

During the next weeks five groundwater monitoring wells in two locations in Ca Mau Province will be drilled with a maximum depth of
250 m. Sediment cores are taken for further mineralogical analysis. Furtheremore, pumping tests and groundwater sampling in different aquifers will be conducted. In the end the wells will be equipped with online sensor technology to monitor salinity, water level and more.

Sampling campaign from 25.03.2019 - 02.04.2019 in Ca Mau Province, Vietnam

Our second field trip since the official start of ViWaT - Engineering focused on groundwater sampling only. The aim was to complete the geochemical screening in Ca Mau Province. Besides taking samples for geochemical analysis at KIT, samples for isotope measurements at Hydroisotop GmbH and mincrobiological samples for TZW were taken. In addition, a questionnaire containing 28 questions about water use and social aspects was carried out.
One meeting with DONRE was organised on the 27.03.2019. Topics discussed included field work and organisation/permission issues as well as project related matters.
